River Ceramics has five spaces available for experienced potters to join our Raku workshop on Saturday, 6/21. If you or someone you know is knowledgeable in working with clay and would like to join us, please send a dm or email us at hello@riverceramicsstudio.com.

Those interested in joining must be capable and confident to build their pieces successfully and independently without instruction or guidance. Studio use available during open hours for registrants leading up to the workshop. Cost includes clay, glazing, and firing of up to 5 pieces (totaling no more than 15-20lbs). Participants must be available to attend the full day workshop at River Ceramics on 6/21. Pieces must be completed by 6/10 to provide time for drying and bisque firing.

Curious about our Clay Play class for toddlers? We have a mini session starting on 5/5. Join us for three sessions and give your toddler a taste of creating with clay! Each session incorporates a children’s book and sensory bin, simple art project to take home that day, and a clay project. The class maxes out at 4 students to ensure a positive and personalized experience for every child.

All pieces seen here were made by ceramicists age 3-however old our oldest guest is/was. (I’m pretty bad at guessing ages so I’m not going to offend anyone!) 😂

Coil pots inspired by the year of the snake! First coil pot was built by Amisha, age 4, and mom. Second coil pot was built by Bea, age 4, and dad! We didn’t get a chance to photgraph the other two coil pots that were constructed in class, but bravo to all four little ceramicists! These came out great!! 👏👏👏

Last Saturday in our Clay Play class we read A Color of His Own by Leo Lionni. We colored our own chameleons using bleeding tissue paper and then chose patterns to roll into clay before cutting out a flower shape and applying our own favorite colors with underglaze. Once glazed, these flower slabs were dropped down into paper bowls to take their form and left to dry. After the bisque firing, we’ll coat them with clear and they’ll be ready to head home! 🦎🧡🌸

Our first off-site birthday party was a huge success! We prepped sensory activities, crafts, and clay projects for 20 little ones. It was so much fun! A big happy 4th birthday and even bigger thank you to Raegan for requesting a Clay Play session designed for her and friends as her birthday celebration! Another big thank you to @carriefinison and her wonderful children’s book “Dozens of Doughnuts” as it inspired the theme of our party. (If you have little ones and don’t own this book, it’s an absolute must have! Certainly a favorite in our studio and my own home. 😊)

This post leads us to the great news that we will begin offering our creative selves and services for off-site events to meet the needs of those bigger groups who reach out requesting birthday and private party info. While our studio maxes at 10 for celebrations, we will be designing a few different off-site party packages for guests to select from. Hooray!

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with us on Monday 3/17 and make a rainbow from 10-11am! A great, tactile project for little ones. We’ll be using air dry clay and a variety of tools to add texture and other design elements to these colorful artworks!

Pieces will be prepped for hanging before participants leave. Each project includes a paint set and two brushes to take home and add color once your rainbow is dry (3-4 days)!

We’re on the search for some passionate art educators and/or art education majors who enjoy working with clay or are eager to learn how.

As a former art educator and current student teacher supervisor, I know how important it is for students to have good instructors. This means we’re currently seeking teachers only.

I also very clearly remember how hard it was to maneuver my own bills and finances my first few years in the classroom. I maintained my part time retail job for 5-6 years into teaching before I finally left. If I had been able to work at a ceramics studio on the side instead?! Hands in, let’s go!

Now I feel it is my duty to help those newbie art educators and art ed. majors. While running the studio, I am also a student teacher supervisor at Montclair State. Believe me when I say I would LOVE to help new teachers figure out the ins and outs of teaching art outside of the stress of a formal classroom. If this is you or someone you know, take advantage of this opportunity!! You also get studio perks and can play with a whole lotta clay. 😉😃
